SUMMARY:Hell Drivers: America's Original Crash Test Dummies
DESCRIPTION:It is not featured in any tourist books and the locals don't
brag about it\, but from an elevated stretch of Route 6 in rural Maine\,
you can see Jim 'Crash' Moreau's junk car sculpture garden. Painted re
d\, white and blue\, the 1970s sedans are frozen in action from Moreau's
illustrious 40-year-plus daredevil career. 'When I die\,' the aging st
untman says\, 'whoever puts my obituary in the paper has to put the name
'Crash' in there or nobody would know me.'Known as the 'Maine Maniac\,'
Moreau is one of the last auto thrill show veterans still on the road.
In the 1950s\, 60s and 70s\, several dozen 'Hell Driver' stunt teams cr
ossed North America and staged auto 'accidents' for family entertainment
. The most successful operation\, the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show\, had fi
ve daredevil units simultaneously performing at race tracks and county f
airs.Hell Drivers smashed through tunnels of fire - and barreled through
walls of ice. Animal rights activists be damned\, they also jumped cars
over circus elephants. The late Evel Knievel was inspired to jump motor
cycles after a thrill show visited his hometown fair in Montana. Major c
ar manufacturers used to compete for the advertising rights to auto thri
ll shows\, but the lucrative sponsorships have long disappeared. A few
surviving daredevils now fight to keep the tradition alive\, refusing to
rust away like Crash's junk car sculpture garden. Meet the last Americ
an 'Hell Drivers\,' a traveling band of stuntmen who earn a living as re
al-life crash test dummies. At county fairs and small racetracks across
the country\, these gutsy characters smash school busses\, mobile homes\
, and the occasional flaming garbage truck -- with no more protection th
an a motorcycle helmet and ordinary seatbelt. Harboring no dreams for Ho
llywood\, these guys barely earn enough to fill their gas tanks. But for
them\, almost dying is the only way to live. Featured daredevils also i
nclude Guinness Book of World Records star Doug Danger\, who has jumped
his motorcycle over a jumbo jet\; Michigan's second-generation 'Hell Dri
ver' Rocky 'Hardcore' Hauri\; Firewall champion Louis 'Rocket' Re and hi
s gorilla alter-ego\, King Kong Knievel.

SUMMARY:TMO @ The Castle
DESCRIPTION:'Osborne is either a nut or a visionary'\, remarks David Conn
elly\, author of an upcoming biography on the life of Thomas Mott Osborn
 e. 'TMO @ The Castle' covers the early naval prison years and the work
of prison reformer Thomas Mott Osborne of Auburn\, New York. Osborne re
flects the progressive thinking of the time regarding prison reform by i
ntroducing his system\, the 'Mutual Welfare League'\, to Auburn\, Sing S
ing and now the Portsmouth naval military prison (100 years old this yea
 r) which is located on a bluff in the Piscataqua River. He was an indus
 trialist\, a School Board member\, mayor of Auburn\, and a prison warden
. Controversy and scandal was ever present during his prison years\, in
cluding those spent at the Portsmouth Naval Prison.David Connelly's inte
rview forms the narrative of the film with his insights into the life of
a man who is not only the former warden of Auburn and Sing Sing state p
risons in New York but also the only civilian commander of the Portsmout
h Naval Prison. Osborne is also a man who comes from great family wealt
h\, is a major success in business but also has a family history of wome
n's rights reform. In additon\, there is rarely seen footage of a 1926
(sound film) where Osborne speaks about his viewpoints on reform and foo
tage not seen in over 80 years of a movie Thomas Mott Osborne personally
supervised where Portsmouth Naval prisoners were used as extras. From th
 e producer of The Castle.

SUMMARY:The Life Before Her Eyes
DESCRIPTION:A dramatic thriller about Diana\, a suburban wife and mother
who begins to question her seemingly perfect life--and perhaps her sanit
y--on the 15th anniversary of a tragic high school shooting that took th
e life of her best friend. In flashbacks\, Diana is a vibrant high schoo
ler who\, with her shy best friend Maureen\, plot typical teenage strate
gies--cutting class\, fantasizing about boys--and vow to leave their sle
epy suburb at the first opportunity. The older Diana\, however\, is haun
ted by the increasingly strained relationship she had with Maureen as da
y of the school shooting approached. These memories disrupt the idyllic
life she's now leading with her professor husband Paul and their young d
aughter Emma. As older Diana's life begins to unravel and younger Diana
gets closer and closer to the fatal day\, a deeper mystery slowly unrave
 ls.

SUMMARY:Secrecy
DESCRIPTION:In a single recent year the U.S. classified about five times
the number of pages added to the Library of Congress. We live in a world
where the production of secret knowledge dwarfs the production of open
knowledge. Depending on whom you ask\, government secrecy is either the
key to victory in our struggle against terrorism\, or our Achilles heel.
But is so much secrecy a bad thing? This film is about the vast\, invis
ible world of government secrecy. By focusing on classified secrets\, th
e government's ability to put information out of sight if it would harm
national security\, Secrecy explores the tensions between our safety as
a nation\, and our ability to function as a democracy.

SUMMARY:Beyond The Call
DESCRIPTION:Ed Artis\, James Laws and Walt Ratterman are three middle age
d men whose idea of adventure is taking desperately needed food and medi
cine into the world's most dangerous places. The three men are self-style
d Knights of Malta\, and in 1995\, they formed Knightsbridge Internation
al\, a unique humanitarian aid organization comprised of the three indiv
iduals\, whose motto is 'High Adventure and Service to Humanity.' Their
specialty is going where death from landmines\, bullets\, or bombs is a
s frequent as death from hunger\, disease\, or the elements. As Laws tel
ls it simply\, 'We do what we can\, when we can\, because we can.'Artis\
, Laws and Ratterman are a fusion of Mother Teresa and Indiana Jones. T
heir personal convictions and courage drive them to places like Afghanis
 tan\, Albania\, Chechnya\, Cambodia\, Rwanda and the southern Philippine
s\, often before other aid organizations arrive. The three are still on
the ground when other aid organizations deem things too dangerous and p
ull out. Artis explains: 'We're not there to change anybody's politics\
, we're not in the God business\, and we pay our own way.'BEYOND THE CAL
L inspires as it entertains. The camera follows Artis\, Laws and Ratter
man as they take us through some of the most forbidding yet beautiful pl
aces on Earth\, on a journey into the heart of humanity and the soul of
courage.BEYOND THE CALL is made in the cinema vérité style of the direct

SUMMARY:I.O.U.S.A.
DESCRIPTION:Wake up\, America! We're on the brink of a financial meltdown
. I.O.U.S.A. boldly examines the rapidly growing national debt and its c
onsequences for the United States and its citizens. Burdened with an eve
r-expanding government and military\, increased international competitio
n\, overextended entitlement programs\, and debts to foreign countries t
hat are becoming impossible to honor\, America must mend its spendthrift
ways or face an economic disaster of epic proportions. Throughout histo
ry\, the American government has found it nearly impossible to spend onl
y what has been raised through taxes. Wielding candid interviews with bo
th average American taxpayers and government officials\, Sundance vetera
n Patrick Creadon (Wordplay) helps demystify the nation's financial prac
tices and policies. The film follows former U.S. Comptroller General Dav
id Walker as he crisscrosses the country explaining America's unsustaina
ble fiscal policies to its citizens. With surgical precision\, Creadon i
nterweaves archival footage and economic data to paint a vivid and alarm
ing profile of America's current economic situation. The ultimate power
of I.O.U.S.A. is that the film moves beyond doomsday rhetoric to proffer
potential financial scenarios and propose solutions about how we can re
create a fiscally sound nation for future generations.

SUMMARY:One Water
DESCRIPTION:Water's connection to human life is universally celebrated in
the major ritual ceremonies of the world. Once water was considered to
be nature's endowment to life. Like air\, we took it for granted and eve
n if one did not possess the means to have it delivered to our doorstep\
, water was free for us to access in the rivers and streams of our commu
nities. Environmental degradation\, industrial pollution\, population gr
owth and climate change have all contributed to our precarious relations
hip to water. The majority of humanity is faced with a potable water cri
sis. In the developing world\, women and children walk longer distances
everyday to fetch water of questionable quality to fulfill their daily n
eeds for survival. Bad water feeds the vicious cycle of ill health and p
overty.Governments\, international organizations and corporations combin
e their efforts to build large and expensive infrastructure projects. Bi
g dams bring prosperity at the cost of environmental degradation and the
uprooting of the lives of millions of people. Great rivers and waterway
s\, that once provided free access to potable water\, now carry the toxi
c burden of industrial society and the teeming millions that depended on
free access to natural water sources for survival are offered piped saf
e water service - but at a price.

SUMMARY:Bill Spaceman Lee: High & Outside
DESCRIPTION:High and Outside is a raucous\, rousing\, iconoclastic journe
y through the baseball life of Bill ?Spaceman? Lee. One of the most colo
rful and controversial figures to play the game\, Bill?s rebellious spir
 it\, fun-loving attitude\, spirit-of-the-60s philosophy endeared him to
fans but pitted him squarely in opposition to the corporate baseball est
ablishment. And Bill did not back down.Rumor had it that Bill was black
balled from baseball\, a conspiracy that has never been uncovered. How
could the fun loving ?Spaceman? be kicked out of baseball? Why? Too co
ntroversial ? or simply washed up? 'High & Outside' looks for answers.
Anything but conventional\, Bill was the first professional athlete to a
dmit using marijuana\; he took sides on everything from artificial turf
to segregation in schools. A "baseball utopian\," Bill was actively inv
olved in the early days of the baseball players union. He staged one-ma
n walkouts but opposed the 1981 strike. Lee was a voice of reason and s
anity in a game corrupted by 'planet-polluting owners' and the corporate
  mindset. He was consistently unpredictable\, 'a free man\, and a free-r
adical\, not owned by any corporation\, yet becoming increasingly diffic
ult to handle for owners and management. 'High and Outside' reveals Bil
l's enigmatic personality and the unlikely story of Bill's banishment fr
om the game. In the tradition of 'Bang the Drum Slowly'\, and 'Fear Str
ikes Out'\, 'High and Outside' will make you think\, especially make you
laugh\, and remind you that there is more to baseball than steroids\, s
 alaries\, and the bottom line.

SUMMARY:Crazy
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the life of Hank Garland\, CRAZY is the story of
a legendary guitar player who emerged from Nashville in the 1950's. Bles
sed with incomparable\, natural talent\, Hank quickly established his re
putation as the finest session player in Nashville. Artists such as Roy
Orbison\, Patsy Cline\, The Everly Brothers and Elvis all sought Hank fo
r their recordings. Moving effortlessly from country\, to rock-a-billy\,
to jazz\, Hank was also recognized by the likes of Dave Bruebeck\, Gary
Burton\, Joe Morello and Joe Benjamin. The 50's Nashville scene was uni
que - dominated by a group of executives and musicians who controlled th
e industry. Hank\, in his pursuit of musical excellence\, often came int
o conflict with the business\, which he found restrictive and frustratin
 g. But it was his relationship with his wife\, Evelyn\, which may have l
ed to his demise.Beautiful\, Evelyn was unlike any woman Hank had ever e
ncountered when meeting her during a show in Chicago. She excited and fa
scinated him\, and turned a whirlwind romancae into an almost instant ma
rriage. But Evelyn was not all she appeared to be\, and when confronted
with the reality of Hank's obsessive dedication to his music\, began to
demonstrate a desperate need to make him love only her. But 43 years aft
er Hank disappeared from music\, his guitar lives on in a number of hit
records\, and one\, amazing solo jazz effort.

SUMMARY:An Unlikely Weapon
DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, in 1/500th of a second Eddie Adams photographed a S
aigon police chief\, General Nygoc Loan\, shooting a vietcong guerilla p
oint black. Some say that photograph ended the Vietnam war. The photo
brought Eddie fame and a Pulitzer\, but Eddie was haunted by the man he
had vilified. He would say\, 'Two lives were destroyed that day\, the v
ictim's and the general.' Other's would say three lives were destroyed.
Eddie Adams\, like most artists\, was tortured by his need for perfectio
 n. Nothing he did ever satisfied him. He carved out many careers shoot
ing covers for Life\, Time\, and even Penthouse. Yet\, somehow\, he was
always pulled back into documenting wars\, 13 all together. Finally he
hit the wall and couldn't take it anymore. He began shooting celebriti
es because 'It doesn't take anything from you.' Eddie was comfortable w

tographed Clint Eastwood\, Louis Armstrong\, Mother Teresa\, and Pope Jo

the wall of a bathroom stall are the words 'We know who you are\, you f

SUMMARY:Katrina's Children
DESCRIPTION:KATRINA'S CHILDREN is a multi-faceted portrait of nineteen ch
ildren\, ages 5 through 13\, from different neighborhoods of New Orleans
. Told entirely from the children?s point of view\, the film captures wi
th vivid poignancy the tragic ramifications of the greatest man made and
natural disaster in modern American History. By focusing exclusively on
  children?s experiences\, KATRINA'S CHILDREN humanizes this epic storm a
nd seeks to understand the heartbreaking consequences in a small intimat
e way. Part oral history\, part lyrical meditation on childhood\, loss\,
  grief\, healing and socio-economic divides\, KATRINA'S CHILDREN address
es these grand themes through intimate vignettes that are deceivingly un
derstated. The film shifts between past and present\, weaving the childre
n's thoughts on Katrina with 'verite-style' scenes of their everyday lif
 e. We enter the children's world through their stories\, play and art an
d we have animated several of their drawings\, magically bringing to lif
e their interior universe. The children we are profiling come from all wa
lks of life: from the daughter of the queen of Carnival\, to underprivil
eged kids still stuck in Texas. Their common denominator is Katrina - an
event that affected them all\, to varying degrees. The similarities and
differences between these children are at times surprising and reveal p
atterns and problems that predate Katrina. Aching with sadness\, yet gro
unded in hope\, KATRINA'S CHILDREN is ultimately a celebration of childr
en's extraordinary power of resilience and a tribute to New Orleans' uni
 que and indomitable spirit.

SUMMARY:Today The Hawk Takes One Chick
DESCRIPTION:Witnessing the highest rate of HIV infection in the world and
the lowest life expectancy TODAY THE HAWK TAKES ONE CHICK moves delicat
ely between the lives of three grandmothers whose experiences highlight
a rural community at the threshold of simultaneous collapse and reinvent
ion.The film creates a portrait of life by layering discrete moments in
time. Presented without an overt narrative structure\, the film's drama
emerges from the patient accumulation of steady details that\, in sum\,
tell a greater story of family\, struggle\, and the weight of an uncerta
in future in a world a world dictated by AIDS. The events unfold in a ru
ral area with-in a 15-mile radius of St Phillips Health Center where one
grandmother works as a nurse. The facts that precede the film are that
in the southern African kingdom of Swaziland\, 40% of its people are HIV
positive and life expectancy has dropped to 32-years.* The lives of th
e three women featured in the film have been consumed by addressing the
needs of their community while at the same time remaining the threads of
the fraying traditional life. The gentle rural landscape and way of lif
e\, its humor\, joy\, and deeply held spiritual beliefs\, are in stark c
ontrast with the urgency of the everyday life. What is life when sicknes
s and death are an everyday experience in a new world order dictated by
AIDS. We are forced to ponder the question asked by granny Albertina: 'W
hat will happen when all the grannies are dead?'

SUMMARY:Chronic Town
DESCRIPTION:Truman Korovin is a lonely\, sharp-witted cab driver in Fairb
anks\, Alaska. The usual routine of picking up fares and spending his n
ights at his favorite bar\, the Boatel\, is disrupted when his girlfrien
d Emily dumps him on one of the coldest nights of the year. An acid tri
p seems like a good idea to help numb the pain\, but when the trip goes
sour\, Truman winds up in the local 'loony bin' on what looks like a sui
cide attempt. During his stay\, Truman spends time with an issue-laden
therapy group where he gets re-acquainted with one of his old cab fares\
, a local stripper named Eleanor. He also befriends Elizabeth\, an amus
ing old lady from the Seniors Home\, as part of his therapy. Although h
is trip to the bin seems like a brief detour in his life\, Eleanor and E
lizabeth open up a new world to Truman. It might not always be a better
world\, but it's a new one\; and the emotionally detached Truman finds
himself right in the middle of it. At a point in his life when Truman w
as ready to be a spectator\, he may just find himself caring enough to g
 et back in the game.
